Whether you are missing a single tooth or no longer have any of your natural teeth, dental implants are the ideal option for tooth restoration. Unlike traditional dentures, implants replace both the roots of your tooth and the tooth itself.
For many patients, the primary motivation for getting dental implants are an improved appearance and increased comfort compared to dentures. They have many additional benefits as well. These include:
- Renewed ability to speak clearly
- Fewer food restrictions than removable dentures
- No special cleaning required
- Prevents remaining teeth from shifting towards the spot left open by the missing tooth
- Does not cause facial sagging
- Can last for a lifetime with proper care
What to Expect When Receiving Dental Implants
Our dentist first examines the intended area of the dental implant to make sure it can support the new root and denture attached to it. Some patients require a bone graft to provide adequate strength in the jaw before proceeding with the implant process. The next step involves our dentist placing tiny rods into your jawbone called abutments. These act as your new roots.
After placement of the abutments, your jaw will need time to heal. The metal rods need to fuse with the existing bone in a process called Osseointegration. This can take up to several months. You will need to come to our office for periodic progress checks during this time.
For the last step of the implant process, our dentist attaches your restoration to the abutments. This may be a denture, crown, or bridge. We take special care to ensure that the shade of your new teeth closely matches that of your existing teeth. We want you to have a natural-looking smile just as much as you desire to have one.
